Improving learner outcomes

Culturally Inclusive Teaching and Learning

Purpose and Rationale

Kids and their teacher This course has been developed by the NSW Department of Education, Multicultural Education team. The content is adapted from the unit Language Backgrounds Other than English, as part of the Classroom Teacher Program.

The purpose of this course is to support teachers to implement culturally inclusive teaching practices so that all students can participate successfully in our culturally diverse society.

Culturally inclusive practices recognise and value the backgrounds of all students and promote an open and tolerant attitude towards diverse cultures, languages, religions, and world views. (NSW Department of Education, Multicultural Education Policy 2005).

The course is open to all educators in Australia. The professional learning in this course will support participants to develop and implement strategies and practices so that students achieve the broad learning outcomes defined in the NESA K-10 Curriculum Framework and Statement of Equity Principles and in the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (December 2019).

NSW logoThe NSW Department of Education is endorsed to provide NESA Professional Development for teachers accredited at Proficient Teacher.

The course is divided into two sections:

  1. Understanding
  2. Reflecting
